Some people think all we do at NassauFLDOGE is give a thumbs down to city and county government.
We get why it might feel that way just because of the work we do to expose waste, fraud and abuse.
But here’s the truth: when local government does something smart, restrained, or fiscally responsible—we notice. And we say so.
That’s why it’s worth giving the City of Fernandina Beach a very Thumbs Up this week.
On Tuesday night, by a unanimous vote, the City of Fernandina Beach opted out of the inter-local agreement with Nassau County to collect mobility fees.
Let that sink in.
This is a city that rarely turns down an opportunity to collect a fee—and yet even they said:
Enough
When Everyone Is Telling You the Same Thing…
Let’s recap:
- The Attorney General of the State of Florida said Nassau County’s fees were out of line.
- The Chief Financial Officer of the State of Florida said Nassau County’s fees were out of line.
- Now, the City of Fernandina Beach—hardly a fee-averse institution—has effectively said Nassau County’s fees are out of line.
At what point does the message start to land?
There’s an old saying:
If you think everybody else is wrong, it’s probably you that’s wrong.
So we’ll ask it again—because it bears repeating:
What is it going to take for Nassau County to wake up and realize its fees are out of control?
Credit Where Credit Is Due
Fernandina Beach didn’t posture.
They didn’t punt.
They didn’t hide behind process or “staff recommendations.”
They looked at the situation and said no.
For that, they earn a rare DOGE thumbs up.
Now the ball is squarely back in Nassau County’s court.
And the question remains:
Will Nassau County leaders keep insisting everyone else is wrong—or finally take a hard look in the mirror?
